Where Has This Thing Been All My (Canning) Life?  
I had never owned a pressure canner before this year but I thought I would try one after learning that pressure canning is more efficient and better at keeping nutrients in the canned food. I read many reviews including those on Amazon and made the decision to spend the bucks and purchase this All-American one instead of the cheaper Presto one. Where has this thing been all my canning life? It is a workhorse very easy to use and VERY well made. Ive used it to preserve 100 pounds of tomatoes this season -- in fact its working away right now as I type. I havent had any problems with it shooting pieces parts across the kitchen (though I havent stuck my face all that close to it just in case!) but will update if anything happens. To me it seems like a wonderful pressure canner in all its aluminum-cast glory!! I havent tried it as a pressure cooker - but as a canner its awesome! : 2010-09-18 08:38:58

Heavy duty but there was a learning curve for me  
I originally bought the Presto canner because Amazon was not selling the All American at the time. But after I read the scary reviews of the Presto canner describing gauges flying off etc. I was afraid to use it so I sent it back and ordered the All American from an outside vendor.

This is a great canner very heavy duty I have no fears of it exploding in the kitchen but there was a learning curve for me. I had never done pressure canning before and the first time I used it the canner never pressurized I think because I hadnt screwed the lid down properly. And the instruction booklet was a bit vague about the whole "venting" process which is described in more detail on USDAs canning site. I was also unclear on what constitutes a jiggle or a sputter on the weighted gauge. If you are new to pressure canning Id recommend doing a trial run with just water before you wreck a whole batch of food like I did. Never having canned before I did a lot of research on whats out there including cooker/cans that were twice as expensive. Chose this because of reputation size and features. Excellent product with a very good care book.

Extremely simply to operate even for a neophyte like me. This baby holds a lot and my success ratio on the first two tries was 100%. I did pressure canning of an Italian sauce with meat and then did the boiling method for homemade pickles. Again all you have to do is simply follow the directions. I would emphaize the importance of filling your jars to between 1/2 and 1/4 of an inch from the top for success.

You will simply love this product. Now you can take some of your favorite items and preserve them for a year or more instead of having to fix them with a lot of frequency. : 2010-09-15 04:05:54

Canner works fine on outdoor burner!  
I have a glass top stove and was looking for a canning solution - American Canners didnt prohibit using on an outdoor burner like Presto canners so I finally ordered it and gave it a try. It works fine except on 90+days where it will run a little hot and we have to watch it and keep turning down the temperature on the outdoor cooker (it slowly increases on its own). I think its too big for my Coleman camp stove. I havent had any problems with the lid like other postings described. We used olive oil instead of vaseline to keep the lid lubricated as this was an option in the instructions. I struggled with whether to buy the next size down but am glad I got this size because of three reasons - 1) seems like bigger size would do better on the outdoor cooker and 2) wanted option for doing bigger batches of pints (just in case) and 3) wanted to use it as a water bath for the quarts. Great system  
Ive been using a pressure canner for years now. Used one when I thought the Y2K issue was serious canned up scads and scads of meat. This is a canner you want for meats. Otherwise when it comes to vegetables use the usual water system. I think everyone should use this system as it does everything meat everything!!! : 2010-09-15 04:05:54

Good craftmanship!  
This pressure canner is of very high quality. The first time I opened the box and took it out I can see the big difference with the one I currently have. I am so happy that I dont have to be concerned with the gasket anymore. Furthermore the display gauge gives you an idea as to how long it will be before it will jiggle and for you to lower down the heat. The only thing that youll have to be aware of is that you have to ensure that the cover is attached properly to the bottom with the wingnuts. I was successful with my first try but the second time I used it I was a bit more careless. There was so much steam coming out that it did not reach the correct pressure so I had to stop the canning in order to avoid drying out. : 2010-09-15 04:05:54

Wow when you work with this it feels like you have old-fashioned craftsmanship at your fingertips. It works great. Does exactly what it should. A great size for canning. Easy to use except that it is heavy even empty. We really liked the idea of not having a rubber gasket. Weve done probably 10-12 batches of pressure canning in the past few weeks and we are very pleased. : 2010-09-15 04:05:54
